Benefits Specialist

Purpose: To provide direct services to the elderly regarding entitlement programs (Medicare, Medicaid, SSI) and act as an advocate on their behalf.  Also a resource for insurance, housing, consumer problems, Judicare, Indigent drug program, and Directives.
Eligibility: 60 years of age and older.

Food Stamps

Purpose: To help purchase food and groceries.  The Food Stamp Program helps low-income households purchase food and groceries to maintain good health.  The amount of monthly Food Stamp Coupons received depends upon family size and income.
Eligibility: Low income and SSI eligible people with limited assets.

Medical Assistance (MA)/Medicaid

Purpose: To help pay for health care services such as home health care, physician and dental care, hospital costs, prescriptions, medical transportation, medical equipment, nursing home care, etc.  Medical Assistance/Medicaid usually covers those medical costs not paid for by Medicare, such as deductibles and 20% co-payments.
Eligibility: Low income people with limited assets.

Medicare

Purpose: To provide health insurance for eligible people.  Medicare is a federal insurance that has two parts:  Part A covers hospital costs and Part B covers physician services, therapies, some medical equipment, some home health care services, etc.
Eligibility: Aged 65 and older or certain disabled people.  Contact Social Security Administration three (3) months before turning age 65 to sign up for Medicare.  Those already receiving Social Security checks should receive a Medicare card automatically.

Ombudsman

Purpose: To receive and investigate complaints regarding nursing home care and other government services.  Provides information regarding Social Security, SSI, food stamps, social services, housing, etc. for senior citizens.
Eligibility: Senior citizens

Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB)

Purpose: To help pay for Medicare premiums and deductibles for low-income people not eligible for Medical Assistance.
Eligibility: Low income people with Medicaid benefits whose assets do not exceed $4,000 for an individual and $6,000 for a couple.

 

Specified Low Income Medicare Beneficiaries (SLMB)

Purpose: To pay the Medicare Part B premium only for incomes higher than for MA and QMB.

Social Security Information

Purpose: To provide retirement, survivors, Medicare and disability benefits to eligible people.
Eligibility: Age 62 and older, or if a widow aged 60, or if widowed and disabled aged 50.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Purpose: To provide supplemental monthly income for people with limited income and assets.  Those qualifying for SSI automatically qualify for Medicaid.
Eligibility: Age 65 and older or blind or disabled.  Assets must be less than $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple.  House, car, and household furnishings are not included in assets.

Veterans’ Services

Purpose: To provide assistance and claim benefits to all qualifying veterans and their dependents or survivors.
